Department of Biochemistry & Microbiology

Biochemistry, the branch of science that explains the chemical basis of life, is truly a merge of chemical sciences and biological sciences.Biochemistry is the application of chemistry to the study of biological process at the cellular and molecular levels. Key applications of the subject include medicine (drug development, diagnostics),agriculture, (genetically modified crops, pesticides), industry (enzymes, bio fuels)and environmental management(bio remediation).

Microbiology involves the study of microscopic organisms which has immensely contributed to methods of disease diagnosis, prevention, and control of infection, ensuring quality assurance for food, pharmaceutical, and chemical industry, control of environmental pollution, and waste disposal systems. It is microbiology that led to the development of antibiotics and vaccines.

The department features experienced faculty members including Professors, Associate Professors, and Assistant Professors, specialized in the core subjects. The department is supported by well-equipped laboratories and a central library having a wide range of reference textbooks and journals.

   a) B.Sc. BIOCHEMISTRY AND INDUSTRIAL MICROBIOLOGY
   
   Double major programme in Biochemistry and Microbiology with a panel of minor courses to choose from.
   
   Eligibility – A pass in Higher Secondary Examination of the State or an Examination accepted by the University as equivalent thereto with Biology as one of the subjects.

   1) M.Sc. Microbiology (2-year Regular Course)
   
   Eligibility – B.Sc Degree in Life Sciences (Microbiology, Biochemistry & Industrial Microbiology, Biotechnology (Double Main & Triple Main) Biochemistry, Zoology & Botany) from University of Kerala or recognized as equivalent there to by University of Kerala securing not less than 55% marks.
